How to use the template

Fill in the song details first, honestly: the genre, mood, style and instrument choices in the form are how a pitch reaches the right editors. Then write the four short parts of the description (what the song is about, how it was made, where it sits, and your marketing plan) and join them. The description field has a 500-character limit, about five or six sentences, as a TuneCore guide republished by Hypebot puts it. Count the characters before you paste it in.

Write it for the editors who will read it: plain words, one or two specific details, no hype and no links. The four examples in the PDF, for fictional artists in four genres, run from about 400 to 450 characters each.

Spotify’s rules for pitching

  • One song at a time. You can pitch one unreleased song; once it goes live, you can pitch the next.
  • Unreleased only. A song that is already out cannot be pitched. Videos can be pitched unreleased or within 7 days of release.
  • At least 7 days before release. Spotify asks you to deliver your music at least 7 days ahead so its editors have time to listen. Earlier is better.
  • Release Radar. A song pitched in time is added to your followers’ Release Radar playlists.
  • No guarantee. Spotify says plainly that pitching does not guarantee placement.

All five points come from Spotify’s own help page on pitching music to playlist editors. Check it before each release, as the rules change.

What makes a pitch easier to place

Editors listen to the song; the pitch helps them place it. Say what the song is about in your own words, give one detail they will hear, and tell them what is happening around the release: a video, press, shows, ads. A marketing plan with real dates shows the song will have listeners beyond the playlist. Nobody outside Spotify can promise a place on its editorial playlists: our guide to Spotify promotion explains what is allowed and what is not.

Something for the marketing plan

The last part of the description is the one most independent artists leave thin. Our music marketing runs your official video as a YouTube campaign, shown as Google Ads to people who watch similar artists, and publishes an editorial feature about you on one of the publications we work with. Together they start at $249 per release, with a Google Ads report every week. We don’t sell streams or playlist places. The feature is sponsored content, as our disclaimer states.

Questions

Frequently asked.

How long can a Spotify playlist pitch be?

The description field in Spotify for Artists has a 500-character limit, about five or six sentences. Count the characters before you paste it in.

How far in advance do you pitch to Spotify editors?

At least 7 days before release, according to Spotify. Pitching earlier gives editors more time to listen, so pitch as soon as the release shows in Spotify for Artists.

Can I pitch more than one song to Spotify?

Not at the same time. You can pitch one unreleased song; once it goes live, you can pitch another.

Can I pitch a song that is already released?

No. Only unreleased songs can be pitched. Videos can be pitched unreleased or within 7 days of release.

What should I write in a Spotify pitch?

What the song is about, one detail of how it was made, where it sits in your releases, and your marketing plan with dates. Plain words, no hype, no links.

Does pitching guarantee a playlist?

No. Spotify says pitching does not guarantee placement. A song pitched in time is added to your followers’ Release Radar.
