Put the short and long bios in your EPK, and the one-liner in your music press release. Our guide to EPKs covers who reads them.
How to use the template
Start with who will read the bio and the one thing they should remember, then write the long version in three short paragraphs: where you come from, what you have done, and what is next. Cut it down to the short bio and the one-liner, keeping the same facts in the same order, so a journalist, a curator and a fan all read the same story. The filled-in example shows every version for a fictional singer-songwriter.
Show it with details rather than adjectives. "Recorded live in four days in a converted chapel" says more than "a raw, unique sound", and a dated number ("1.2 million streams, October 2026") says more than "a growing fanbase".
Which bio goes where
- One-liner: social profiles, playlist pitches and the line under your name in a press release.
- Short bio (about 100 words): press, festival and venue listings, and the top of your EPK.
- Long bio (150 to 250 words): your EPK and the about page of your website.
- Streaming bio: your Spotify profile, where Spotify for Artists allows up to 1,500 characters and lets you tag artists, albums, playlists and tracks with @.
Use the third person ("Mara Vale is") wherever someone else presents you, and the first person ("I'm Mara") on your own website and socials. Update every version with each release, so the newest single and its date are always in it.
When the bio is ready
A bio is stronger with something new to point at. Our music marketing runs your music video as a YouTube campaign with a guaranteed number of views and publishes an editorial feature about you with your own digital cover, from $249 per release. You approve every word of the feature, and the bio you write here is where it starts.
Frequently asked.
How long should an artist bio be?
Keep a one-liner under 150 characters, a short bio around 100 words and a long bio between 150 and 250 words. Spotify allows up to 1,500 characters for your profile bio.
Should an artist bio be in the first or third person?
Third person for press, your EPK, listings and streaming profiles; first person for your own website, newsletter and socials. Keep the same facts in both.
What should a musician bio include?
Your name and where you are from, what your music is in plain words, what you have done with dates and numbers, your newest release and its date, and where to listen.
What should I leave out of my bio?
Lists of genres, "sounds like" comparisons, phrases like "unique sound", and any number you cannot back up. List paid features as features, not as reviews.
