Publicist cost calculator.
Choose how the publicist charges, by the month or by the hour, and how long you need them. The calculator shows the monthly cost and the total from published 2026 figures, and what an in-house PR specialist would cost over the same months.
How they charge
everything-pr calls six months the realistic floor for professional PR, so the months start at six. Hourly work suits defined tasks such as a press release or interview preparation. For musicians, use the music PR cost calculator.

- Monthly retainer: the total is the published monthly range × the months.
- By the hour: the monthly cost is the hourly range × your hours a month, and the total is that × the months.
- In-house comparison: the US median salary for a PR specialist ÷ 12 × the months, before benefits, tools and media databases.
A worked example: a freelance senior publicist at $80 to $140 an hour, for 20 hours a month over six months, costs $1,600 to $2,800 a month and $9,600 to $16,800 in total. An individual publicist on a retainer of $2,000 to $10,000 a month comes to $12,000 to $60,000 over the same six months.
Where the figures come from
everything-pr’s 2026 pricing guide puts an individual publicist at $2,000 to $10,000 a month and calls six months the realistic floor. goLance’s 2026 rate guide gives freelance PR specialists $40 to $80 an hour at mid-level, $80 to $140 when senior and $140 to $225 with more than ten years’ experience, and Clutch lists US PR firms at $100 to $149 an hour.
Book publicist Kathleen Schmidt writes that book publicity retainers run from about $3,000 to $20,000 a month. The salary is the US Bureau of Labor Statistics median for public relations specialists, $74,750 a year in May 2025. Our guide on how much a publicist costs, and when to hire one covers each model.
When a publicist is worth the money
Hire one when you have news editors will want, a short list of outlets that matter and the budget for several months. Earned coverage builds slowly, so a single month usually ends just as pitches start to land. If you only need one credible page about you by a known date, a publicist is usually not the first spend.
Be careful with anyone who promises earned coverage in a named top-tier outlet for a retainer fee. An editor decides what runs, so a promise like that is either paid placement sold without saying so, or a guess.
Where Blue Leopard Media fits
We do not sell retainers or earned press. We sell sponsored features, written for you and published on titles we work with, at fixed prices: $249 for one feature on one publication, $499 for three and $999 for eight, each with your official cover. You approve the final draft, and on the titles marked Guaranteed · 24h on our PR page the feature is live within 24 hours of your approval (business days), or you can claim a full refund under our refund policy.
Every feature is sponsored content and labelled as such, as our disclaimer states. A feature does not replace an agency or a publicist if you need journalists to choose your story or someone to handle a crisis, and we do not promise rankings, traffic or sales. If one accurate page about you, live on a date you know, is the job, see the prices.
