Key takeaways

  • In Muck Rack's 2026 survey of 897 journalists, 88% said they immediately disregard pitches that miss their beat, so a relevant angle matters more than a long media list.
  • Journalists say they prefer one-to-one email (62%), pitches under 200 words (69%) and delivery before noon (78%), with one follow-up 3 to 7 days later.
  • An embargo is an informal request, not a contract. Agree it with a journalist before you send the details.
  • A sponsored feature is not earned coverage. Blue Leopard Media's is labelled, starts at $249 and goes live within 24 hours of your approval.

The short answer

Product launch PR is the work of getting a launch written about by journalists and easy to find on the day buyers look. Earned coverage is the free route, and a journalist decides: in Muck Rack's State of Journalism 2026 survey of 897 journalists, 88% said they immediately disregard pitches that miss their beat.

The paid route is a labelled sponsored feature. Our business publicity service writes one from a ten-minute brief, from $249, and it goes live within 24 hours of your approval.

What to prepare before launch day

Muck Rack asked what a pitch should come with. The top answers were clear relevance to the journalist's beat (70%), interview access to relevant sources (58%), original data or research (40%) and high-resolution images (37%). Build the launch kit around those four:

  • The angle. What changes for the customer, and why it matters now, not a feature list.
  • A source. One founder or expert who is free to talk on launch day.
  • A number. A test result, survey or price comparison you can show. Publish only one that is real.
  • Images. Product shots in high resolution, in one folder. The media kit template lists what else to include.
  • An official record. A short press release on your site, for anyone who wants the facts.

How to pitch the launch

The same survey shows how journalists want to be approached. 62% prefer a one-to-one email, 69% prefer pitches under 200 words and 78% want them before noon. Half say one follow-up is ideal, and 51% say it should come within 3 to 7 days. Mass emails put off 50%, and 71% reject pitches that feel overly promotional.

You can also offer an embargo, which is advance access to the details on the condition that nobody publishes before a set date. Wikipedia notes that embargoes are usually arranged in advance, that publicists who send an embargoed release unasked are only hoping it will be respected, and that breaking one is typically considered a serious breach of trust. Ask first.

If the product is software, Product Hunt's launch page says 12:01 am Pacific Time is the best time to launch for makers who are planning ahead.

The agency range is an everything-pr estimate from October 2026, not a rate card. The week and month ranges come from VisitBritain's guide for travel media. A sponsored feature is not earned coverage, and the FTC's native advertising guide says an ad should not imply it is anything other than an ad, so every feature we publish is labelled sponsored.

A launch timeline that works backwards

  1. Weeks before: agree the angle, source and numbers, and gather the images. Monthly print magazines plan months ahead, so aim at online and weekly outlets for launch week.
  2. About a week before: send short one-to-one pitches, and offer an embargo only to journalists who agree to it.
  3. Launch day: publish your announcement page and press release, and share any coverage.
  4. 3 to 7 days after each pitch: send one follow-up.

If you want a sponsored feature live on the day, allow about a week: we draft within 1 to 3 days of your brief, you approve, and it goes live within 24 hours of approval, counted in business days. Send us the launch date and a ten-minute brief, and you can fix the day it appears.

Questions

Frequently asked.

What is product launch PR?

It is the work of getting a new product written about and easy to find when it goes on sale: a story angle, a source, images, pitches to relevant journalists and, if you pay for it, a labelled feature.

How far ahead should I pitch a product launch?

It depends on the outlet. VisitBritain's guide for travel media says weekly sections produce content about a week ahead and monthly magazines write 3 to 6 months ahead. Check each outlet's lead time before you pitch.

Should I put an embargo on a product launch?

Only if the journalist agrees first. Wikipedia says embargoes are usually arranged in advance, and that a publicist who sends one unasked is only hoping it will be respected.

How much does product launch PR cost?

Pitching yourself costs only time. An everything-pr estimate puts an agency launch project at about $10,000 to $75,000 over 60 to 120 days. A labelled Blue Leopard Media feature starts at $249.

Is a sponsored feature the same as press coverage?

No. Earned coverage is a journalist's own decision. A sponsored feature is paid for and labelled on the page, which is what the FTC's native advertising guide asks of paid content.

Have something to read on launch day.

A labelled company feature with your own cover, from $249. No retainer, and live within 24 hours of your approval, or your money back.
