YouTube Shorts for musicians: how long they can be, how to use your song, and what they pay
A YouTube Short is a vertical or square video of up to three minutes. Here is how to use your song in one, how YouTube counts Shorts views, and where Shorts stop and a paid campaign for your music video begins.

Key takeaways
- Square or vertical videos of up to 3 minutes are categorised as Shorts. A Short over one minute with an active copyright claim is blocked.
- YouTube tells artists to use the official song from the Shorts audio picker, so each Short links to the song page and your Official Music Video.
- Joining the YouTube Partner Program on the Shorts route takes 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. Ad-campaign views do not count.
- Blue Leopard Media does not make Shorts. It runs your finished music video as a Google Ads campaign with guaranteed views, from $249.
The short answer
A YouTube Short is a vertical or square video of up to three minutes, and for a musician it works as promotion for a song, not as income. To join the YouTube Partner Program on the Shorts route you need 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, so most artists post Shorts to send fans to the full release.
Blue Leopard Media does not make or manage Shorts. Our music marketing runs your finished music video as a YouTube campaign with guaranteed views, plus an editorial feature.
Length, shape and what counts as a Short

YouTube Help describes Shorts as short-form videos up to 3 minutes long. Its three-minute Shorts page says a video with a square or vertical aspect ratio, up to three minutes, uploaded on or after 15 October 2024 is categorised as a Short. For Official Artist Channels the date is 8 December 2025. It adds that most songs in the Shorts audio library can run up to 90 seconds in a three-minute Short, though some are limited to 60 or 30.
Two rules that catch musicians
- Claims block longer Shorts. A Short over one minute with an active copyright claim of any type is blocked globally. If your label's first-party claim hits your own upload, YouTube says to ask the label to release it.
- The song has to be eligible. YouTube's music page says a song needs an art track and a sound recording asset from a partner with a Shorts agreement. Ask your label or distributor whether yours has been delivered.
Using your song as the sound
YouTube for Artists says to pick the official song in the Shorts audio picker. Fans who tap the song chip land on a page linking to your Official Music Video and your Official Artist Channel.
Its other advice: try posting weekly, show lyrics on screen for people watching without sound, and make many different Shorts for one song. YouTube's own figure, not an independent one, is that in January 2024 Shorts tripled the average artist's unique viewers.
How Shorts views are counted, and what they pay
Since 31 March 2025 a Short view is counted each time it starts to play or replay, with no minimum watch time, and the old measure continues as "Engaged views", according to YouTube Help. Eligibility and earnings use engaged or qualified views, not the headline count.
On the eligibility page, YouTube lists two routes, both with 1,000 subscribers: 4,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months, or 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. Views from ad campaigns do not count toward either. Updates announced for 1 February 2027 raise the thresholds for new creators to 8,000 watch hours or 20 million Shorts views, still with 1,000 subscribers.
The Shorts monetization policy says ad revenue from between Shorts is pooled. Part of the revenue tied to Shorts that use music covers music licensing, but YouTube says using music does not change a creator's allocation, and creators keep 45% of it. From 1 February 2027 it also asks for 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days to earn from the pool each month. Shorts, ads and the full video
How the options compare:
| Posting Shorts yourself | Running YouTube ads yourself | Blue Leopard Media | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free, apart from your time | You set the budget; views campaigns bill per view | From $249 per release, with a feature and cover |
| What is guaranteed | Nothing: reach depends on viewers | Nothing: results depend on your video, audience and competition | A minimum of 15,000 Google Ads views worldwide on Starter |
| Counts toward Partner Program | Yes, public Shorts views in the Shorts Feed | No: YouTube excludes ad campaigns | No: the same rule applies |
| Best for | Teasers, lyric clips and fan remixes | Learning Google Ads on a small test budget | A finished music video that needs real viewers and a feature |
Shorts are the cheap, steady part of a release. A paid campaign puts the finished video in front of new people, and YouTube says a paid view is counted when someone watches 30 seconds of an in-stream ad or 10 seconds of an in-feed ad, or interacts with it (view metrics). Frequently asked.
How long can a YouTube Short be?
Up to 3 minutes, in a square or vertical aspect ratio, at a maximum of 1080p. Videos uploaded before 15 October 2024 stay long-form, and for Official Artist Channels the date is 8 December 2025.
Can I use my own song in a YouTube Short?
Yes. YouTube for Artists says to choose the official song in the Shorts audio picker so each Short links to the song page. The song needs an art track and a sound recording asset from a partner with a Shorts agreement, so ask your label or distributor.
Do YouTube Shorts make money for musicians?
Only after you join the Partner Program, which needs 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. Revenue is pooled, and creators keep 45% of their allocation.
Do paid views count toward Shorts monetisation?
No. YouTube's eligibility page lists ad campaigns among the views that do not count toward the Partner Program thresholds, for both watch hours and Shorts views.
Does Blue Leopard Media make or post Shorts?
No. It runs your music video as a Google Ads campaign with a guaranteed minimum of views, plus an editorial feature with your own digital cover.
