The short answer
Most small business websites cost between $2,000 and $10,000 to build in 2026 when a freelancer or a small studio builds them. Wix’s August 2026 guide puts a freelance developer at $2,000 to $10,000 or more up front, and a web design agency at $15,000 to $50,000 or more. Clutch’s pricing guide, updated in September 2026, says agencies charge $2,000 to $100,000, and that most projects reviewed on Clutch cost less than $10,000.
Building it yourself costs far less up front: Wix’s plans start at $17 a month on a yearly subscription. A single page is cheaper than a full site, too: GoDaddy puts a one-page website at $500 to $5,000. Our own website development prices are in the last section.

Prices by type of build
These are published ranges, read on 23 October 2026. They are guides to the market, not quotes.
| Build | Published price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| A builder site you make yourself | $17 to $159 a month on yearly plans | Wix, 2026 |
| A one-page website | $500 to $5,000 | GoDaddy, February 2026 |
| A business website by a freelancer | $2,000 to $10,000 or more | Wix, August 2026 |
| A business website by an agency | $15,000 to $50,000 or more | Wix, August 2026 |
| A custom online store | $2,000 to $20,000 or more, plus $29 a month for Shopify Basic, paid yearly | Shopify, September 2026 |
| A mobile app | Most projects $10,000 to $49,999 | Clutch, September 2026 |
What changes the price
- Pages and words. Every extra page needs design, writing and testing. Writing the words yourself saves money; paying someone to write them adds to the bill.
- A template or your own design. Shopify lists prebuilt themes at $0 to $500. A design made for your buyers takes more hours.
- Selling online. Products, payments and a checkout make a store cost more than a site that only explains what you do.
- Where the team works. Clutch lists US web design firms at $100 to $149 an hour and UK firms at $50 to $99.
- Features. Bookings, customer accounts and connections to your other tools push a website towards app prices.
What you keep paying after launch
The build is not the last bill. A builder site is a monthly plan for as long as it is live: Wix’s yearly plans run from $17 to $159 a month, and Shopify Basic is $29 a month paid yearly, before card fees and apps. A custom site needs hosting, a domain, updates and security, from you or from whoever built it. Ask what is included, and what each later change costs, before you sign.
