Press release distribution vs a guaranteed feature: costs and what you get

Press release distribution sends an announcement you wrote to a wire's partner sites, news feeds and journalist databases, from $120 a release at PRWeb or $149 at EIN Presswire, with the largest wires priced by quote. You pay for distribution, not coverage. A guaranteed feature is a sponsored article written about you, which you approve before it goes live, and it does a different job: it gives people who search your name something credible to find.

Key takeaways

  • Published press release distribution prices start at $120 a release (PRWeb) and $149 (EIN Presswire); PR Newswire, Business Wire and GlobeNewswire do not show prices on the pages checked, so you ask for a quote.
  • A wire guarantees that your release goes out through its network. It does not guarantee that a journalist writes about you, and EIN Presswire's FAQ says as much.
  • Google lists optimised anchor-text links in press releases distributed on other sites as link spam, and EIN Presswire allows only no-follow links, so the value of a wire release is reach and record, not links.
  • A guaranteed feature is sponsored content written about you, approved by you and built to be found when people search your name. For a founder or small business that wants credibility rather than a news announcement, it is usually the better fit.

The short answer

Press release distribution puts your announcement on a newswire. The wire sends it to its partner websites, news feeds and journalist databases, usually the same day, and you get a report of where it appeared. Published prices start at $120 a release at PRWeb and $149 at EIN Presswire. The biggest wires, PR Newswire, Business Wire and GlobeNewswire, do not show a price on the pages we checked, so you ask for a quote.

What you buy is distribution. Nobody at the wire promises that a journalist will read the release, let alone write about you. That is the right tool for some jobs, such as an earnings statement or an announcement reporters need to see, and the wrong tool for others.

A guaranteed feature is a different product. A publication runs an article about you or your company, written by an editorial team, approved by you and labelled as sponsored. You are paying for the article, not for the chance of one. If your goal is that customers, investors or partners who search your name find something credible, the feature does that job and the wire release mostly does not.

What press release distribution actually delivers

A press release distribution service takes the release you wrote and pushes it through three kinds of channel:

  • Syndication: copies of the release posted automatically on partner websites. EIN Presswire's FAQ lists AP News, more than 115 US TV station sites (local NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX and CW stations) and more than 3,900 Affinity Group Publications. PRWeb's Standard tier and above add, in its words, syndication to "1200+ websites powered by PRNewswire".
  • Feeds and databases: news aggregators, Google News, and terminals and databases used by journalists and investors. EIN Presswire names Bloomberg Terminals and Muck Rack.
  • Journalist lists: some tiers email the release to a list of reporters. At PRWeb that starts at the $360 Advanced tier, with one industry list.

Those syndicated copies are the release itself, reposted, usually in a press-release or partner-content area of the site and credited to the wire. They are not stories written by the station or the publication. EIN Presswire is open about this. Its FAQ answers the question "Does distribution through EIN Presswire guarantee that the media will use my news release?" by guaranteeing publication "on the distribution networks that we control" and through gateway services, "for republishing". The promise covers the network, not the newsroom.

Two more practical points. The wires checked here do not write the release for you: EIN Presswire's FAQ says it does not offer a writing service, and PRWeb includes proofreading only on its $360 and $480 tiers. And the wire's editors can review your text before it goes out; EIN Presswire says a review of a release generally takes about two hours, after a one-time account check for new customers that can take up to two business days.

What "pickup" means, and how to read a distribution report

"Pickup" is the word wires and publicists use for any place your release shows up after it goes out. It covers two very different things, and a distribution report often lists them together.

  • Automatic pickup is syndication: a partner site reposts the release word for word because it has an agreement with the wire. It can produce hundreds of URLs on the day, which is why reports look impressive.
  • Editorial pickup is coverage: a journalist reads the release and writes their own story, quoting it or calling you for more. This is the result most people hope for, and the one nobody can promise.

When you compare press release distribution services, ask each one how its report separates the two. A list of syndicated copies tells you the release went out. Only the second list tells you anyone chose to write about you.

Press release distribution cost: published prices compared

These are the prices each company shows on its own site, checked on 4 October 2026. Where a company does not publish a price, the table says so instead of repeating figures from third-party blogs.

ServicePublished priceWhat the price covers
EIN Presswire$149 for one release; $499 for five (plus one free, limited-time); $999 for fifteenDistribution including AP News, TV station sites, Google News and Bloomberg Terminals; 700 words on Basic, 2,500 on Corporate; three links
PRWeb (Cision)$120, $245, $360 or $480 per releaseBasic: search visibility, 48-hour turnaround. Standard adds syndication to 1,200+ sites. Advanced adds one journalist list and proofreading, 24-hour turnaround
PR Newswire (Cision)Quote onlyIts About page directs you to a phone number or contact form; no rate card on the pages checked
Business WireNot confirmedIts pricing pages refused access when we checked, so no figure is repeated here; ask for a quote
GlobeNewswireQuote onlyThe site offers a demo or sign-up; no prices shown on the pages checked
Blue Leopard Media feature$249 for one publication; $499 for three; $999 for eightA feature written about you by an editorial team, your own digital cover, your approval of every word, sponsored label

The prices are not like for like. A wire charges for sending text you wrote, and the bill grows with word count, extra countries and media at the larger services. A feature price includes the writing. The cheapest wire tier is cheaper than a feature, but it buys a different thing.

What "guaranteed media placement" means at a wire

Search for guaranteed media placement, guaranteed PR or guaranteed publicity and you will find wires selling it too. PR Newswire's Guaranteed Paid Placement is a clear example, and its own page explains it well. It turns your press release into native advertising shown on publisher sites such as AP, Time, USA Today and Rolling Stone, labelled "Sponsored" or "Paid Partner" in the publisher's feed. Its FAQ adds that the content is "not indexed by search engines or searchable on the publisher's site". No price is shown; it is sold by enquiry.

That is a fair product for reaching readers while they browse. It is not a page people find when they search for you later. When a seller offers guaranteed placement, ask three questions: is it an article about you or your release reposted, is it labelled sponsored, and can it be found in search after the campaign ends?

When a wire release is the right tool

A wire release is not a weaker version of a feature. For some jobs it is the correct choice, and a feature is not a substitute.

  • Earnings and other market-moving news from a listed company. The SEC's Regulation FD rule names "press releases distributed through a widely circulated news or wire service" as an acceptable way to make information public. A sponsored feature is not built for that.
  • Announcements reporters need to see the same day: a funding round, an acquisition, a product recall, a senior appointment at a known company. Wires reach newsroom feeds and terminals quickly.
  • An official record. A dated release on a wire is a reference journalists, analysts and partners can cite.
  • Volume. A company with a steady stream of announcements gets a low price per release from bulk credits, such as EIN Presswire's fifteen releases for $999.

If your news is genuinely newsworthy to journalists, the release is the way to tell them, and earned coverage from it is worth more than any paid placement.

What a guaranteed feature does differently

Most founders and small businesses do not have earnings to disclose or news a reporter is waiting for. What they need is simpler: when a prospect, an investor, a hire or a booker searches their name, there should be a credible, current account of who they are. A wire release is poor at that. A feature is built for it.

A feature is advertising, and it should look like advertising to the reader. The FTC's guide to native advertising says an ad "shouldn't suggest or imply to consumers that it's anything other than an ad". A reputable seller labels the feature as sponsored and tells you so before you pay. Be wary of anyone selling a paid article as earned press.

What you get in return is control. The article is about you, it says what is true and current, and it stays on one publication's site, with your name in the headline, where a search can find it.

Where Blue Leopard Media fits

We do not sell wire distribution. If you need to disclose results or get breaking news in front of reporters, use a wire, and we will say so. What we sell is the feature: PR & Media Placements, an editorial feature about you on one of the publications we work with, written by our editorial team from a short brief, with your name in the headline and your own digital cover. You approve every word before anything goes live.

It costs $249 for one publication, $499 for three and $999 for eight, paid once, with no retainer and no monthly fee. On the four core titles your approved feature is live within 24 hours of your approval of the final draft, on business days, or you get a full refund; features on other outlets are quoted per outlet and are not covered by that promise. The terms are in our refund policy.

For founders, founder and executive PR builds the feature to be found on your name: your name in the headline, URL and first paragraph, NewsArticle and Person structured data, links marked sponsored, same-day submission to Google and ranking checks at day 7 and day 30. If it is not ranking by day 30, we strengthen it or publish a second piece. For a company announcement, business publicity puts a company feature on a business publication and adds a "Featured in" badge kit.

Every feature is sponsored content and labelled as such, as our disclaimer states. We guarantee publication in the stated window, not search positions, traffic, leads or sales. See PR pricing, or contact us and tell us what you want people to find when they search your name.

Questions

Frequently asked.

How much does press release distribution cost?

Published prices start at $120 a release on PRWeb (up to $480 for its Premium tier) and $149 on EIN Presswire, with bulk credits bringing EIN's price to $999 for fifteen. PR Newswire, Business Wire and GlobeNewswire did not show prices on the pages we checked on 4 October 2026, so you ask for a quote.

Does press release distribution guarantee media coverage?

No. A wire guarantees that your release goes out through its network, including syndicated copies on partner sites. Whether a journalist writes a story is up to the journalist. EIN Presswire's FAQ makes this distinction itself.

What is pickup in press release distribution?

Pickup is anywhere your release appears after distribution. Automatic pickup means partner sites reposting the release word for word; editorial pickup means a journalist wrote their own story from it. Distribution reports often list both together, so ask which is which.

Do links in press releases help SEO?

Not as ranking links. Google's spam policies list optimised anchor-text links in press releases distributed on other sites as link spam, and EIN Presswire allows only no-follow links. The search value of a release is fast indexing and visibility in Google News on the day.

What is guaranteed media placement?

A paid placement where publication is promised in return for a fee. It can mean a press release turned into a native ad, such as PR Newswire's Guaranteed Paid Placement, which its page says is not indexed by search engines, or an article written about you and labelled as sponsored. Ask which one you are buying.

Is a guaranteed feature the same as earned press?

No. A guaranteed feature is sponsored content and should be labelled that way. Earned press is a journalist choosing to write about you, which nobody can sell. A feature's value is a credible, approved article that people find when they search your name.

A feature, not a wire copy.

An editorial feature written about you, from $249. Live within 24 hours of your approval on the four core titles, or your money back.
