How to get cited by ChatGPT and AI search through press coverage
No one can buy a citation from ChatGPT or Google's AI features. In Muck Rack's May 2026 analysis of more than 25 million cited links, earned media made up 84%, journalism 27% and paid or advertorial content 0.3%, so the useful move is credible, crawlable coverage.

Key takeaways
- Neither OpenAI nor Google offers a way to apply for citation. OpenAI says allowing OAI-SearchBot helps a site appear in ChatGPT search, and Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode have no additional requirements.
- In Muck Rack's May 2026 study of more than 25 million cited links, 84% were earned media, 27% journalism and 0.3% paid or advertorial content.
- Ahrefs found branded web mentions correlate with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, against 0.218 for backlinks. It calls this correlation, not causation.
- A labelled sponsored feature is paid content: use it as a supporting page you control, not as a route to a promised citation.
The short answer
You cannot buy a citation from ChatGPT or Google's AI features, and no platform promises one. The evidence is narrower: AI answers lean on earned, journalistic coverage. In Muck Rack's May 2026 analysis of more than 25 million cited links, earned media made up 84%, journalism 27% and paid or advertorial content 0.3%.
So AI visibility PR means getting accurate, crawlable coverage of your brand on credible sites. A labelled feature is sponsored and falls in the paid category, so treat it as supporting evidence and a page you control.
What the platforms say about sources

OpenAI's crawler documentation says OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features and recommends allowing it in robots.txt. GPTBot, used for training, is a separate setting. The page does not guarantee inclusion, and says a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to be picked up.
Google's AI features page, last updated in December 2025, says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode and no special structured data. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet in ordinary Search.
Accuracy is uneven. A Tow Center study of eight AI search tools, published by the Columbia Journalism Review in March 2025, found they answered more than 60% of 1,600 queries incorrectly when asked to identify the source of a news excerpt. Check what assistants say about you, not only whether they name you.
What cited coverage looks like in the research
Muck Rack sells media-monitoring software and classifies each citation against its own outlet database, so read its figures as indicative. Its February 2026 update adds that more than half of observed citations were published in the last 12 months, the highest citation rate falls within seven days of publication, and press releases account for about 1%.
Ahrefs studied about 75,000 brands and found branded web mentions correlated with appearing in Google's AI Overviews at 0.664, against 0.218 for backlinks. Ahrefs states that correlation is not causation.
Three cautions follow. These studies describe what AI cites across thousands of brands, not what will happen to yours. Muck Rack used unbranded, top-of-funnel questions, so it says little about queries that name your company. And citation behaviour changes whenever a model or its search provider changes, so a tactic that works this quarter may not next quarter.
How the options compare
How the options compare:
| Retainer PR agency | Press release wire | Blue Leopard Media | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $3,500 to $10,000 a month at a boutique agency | From about $850 for a 400-word national release | $249 for one feature, $499 for three |
| Class in the study | Earned, if editors run it (84% of links) | Press release (about 1%) | Sponsored, so paid (0.3%) |
| What is guaranteed | Effort, not coverage | Distribution, not pickup | Live within 24 hours of approval or money back; no citation promised |
| Best for | Ongoing earned coverage in top-tier outlets | Formal announcements needing wide distribution | A labelled page about you that supports earned coverage |
Agency and wire prices are everything-pr's October 2026 estimates, not rate cards. The same guide says AI visibility programmes can take six to nine months to move citation share.
What to do first
- Allow OAI-SearchBot and Googlebot in robots.txt, and confirm your key pages are indexed in Google Search Console.
- Pitch news that is recent and factual, since fresh coverage is cited most, and give journalists numbers they can quote.
- State your name, offer and numbers identically on every profile and page.
- Ask two or three assistants about your brand each month, note which pages they cite, and correct any errors at the source.
When you want a labelled page about your brand to sit beside earned coverage, a single feature starts at $249 with your official cover and no retainer, live within 24 hours of your approval. It is sponsored and labelled as such, and it does not promise an AI citation.

Frequently asked.
Can PR guarantee I am cited by ChatGPT?
No. OpenAI's crawler page does not guarantee inclusion in ChatGPT search, and Google lists no application route for AI Overviews. Coverage can make accurate source pages available, but the platform decides what it cites.
Do press releases get cited by AI?
Rarely. Muck Rack's February 2026 update puts press releases at about 1% of citations, up from 0.2% in July 2025, partly because wire sites became more open to AI crawlers.
Does blocking GPTBot hide me from ChatGPT search?
OpenAI says each crawler setting is independent. GPTBot concerns training, while OAI-SearchBot is the one used to surface sites in ChatGPT's search features.
Will a sponsored feature get my brand cited?
There is no evidence it will. Muck Rack puts paid and advertorial content at 0.3% of cited links. A labelled feature is better seen as a credible page you control.
