Key takeaways

- It works in Spotify Radio, Autoplay and the Daily, Artist, Mood, Decade and Genre Mixes. Spotify says it is not active in editorial playlists.
- Spotify's page says it is in beta and asks for at least 3 eligible songs and 25,000 monthly listeners, plus a song that has been out at least 30 days.
- Spotify says the signal raises the likelihood of a recommendation but does not guarantee it. Blue Leopard Media does not sell or manage Discovery Mode.
The short answer
Spotify Discovery Mode is a tool in Spotify for Artists that lets an artist or label mark songs as a priority for Spotify's recommendation system. Spotify charges a 30% commission on recording royalties from streams of those songs in Discovery Mode contexts, and nothing upfront. Spotify says the signal increases the likelihood of a recommendation but does not guarantee it.
We do not sell or manage Discovery Mode: our music marketing work is a YouTube video campaign plus an editorial feature.
Where it applies, and what it costs

Spotify says Discovery Mode is active in a subset of personalised playlists, the ones marked "Made for" a listener, where people are most open to discovery. Its contexts page lists three:
- Spotify Radio
- Autoplay
- Spotify Mixes: Daily, Artist, Mood, Decade and Genre Mixes
Spotify's recommendations page adds that Discovery Mode is not active in its editorial playlists, so it is not a way to reach editors.
The cost is a cut of royalties, not a fee. Spotify's help page says a 30% commission applies to recording royalties from streams of your selected songs in those contexts, and every other stream stays commission-free. As an illustration, if those streams earn $100 in recording royalties, Spotify keeps $30. The Spotify for Artists Discovery Mode page says the cost is deducted from future statements.
The model is disputed. In 2021 the Recording Academy called it payola-like, and the House Judiciary Committee sent Spotify a letter asking for more information. It is optional, and you can turn it off.
Who is eligible
Spotify says Discovery Mode is in beta and not available to every artist. Your team needs all of these:
- At least 3 eligible songs and 25,000 monthly listeners, which Spotify says is the audience size where it works best.
- An active Spotify for Artists team with a billing country on Spotify's list, which includes the United States.
- A distributor on Spotify's list of licensors. Others can ask their distributor, or a label can contact its Spotify representative.
Each song must have been on Spotify at least 30 days, have at least 20 streams in Discovery Mode contexts in the last 28 days, and have met Spotify's monetisation criteria last month.
How to set up a campaign
- In Spotify for Artists, open Campaigns, then Discovery Mode.
- Between the 11th and the last day of the month, click to set up next month's campaign.
- Pick songs, review and submit. The campaign starts at 12 AM UTC on the 1st.
Spotify says reporting starts on day 11 of the campaign and covers listeners, new listeners, saves and playlist adds. Its lift estimates "aren't predictive of future outcomes", and results can be affected by other marketing, so judge it against your own goals.
