Facebook and Instagram ads for musicians: objectives, music rights and budget

Meta lists six ad objectives and none of them is streams. Pick the one that matches your goal, send fans to a page you own, use music you may license for ads, and know when a YouTube campaign is the better fit.

Key takeaways

  • Meta's six objectives are Awareness, Traffic, Engagement, Leads, App promotion and Sales. Match one to one goal: Leads for sign-ups, Sales for tickets and merch, Traffic for visits.
  • Meta bars placing its pixel on websites you do not own, so send fans to your own page first or Meta cannot see what happens after the click.
  • Meta's licensed Instagram library is for personal use. Sound Collection can be used in ads, and other music for ads needs the right licences.
  • Blue Leopard Media's Meta Ads service is built for brands that need sales and leads. Its music marketing is a YouTube campaign through Google Ads, not Meta ads.

The short answer

Facebook ads for musicians work when you pick the one Meta objective that matches your goal: Traffic or Leads to send fans to a page you own, Sales for tickets and merch, Awareness for reach. Meta lists six objectives and recommends Advantage+ placements, which include Reels. Our Meta Ads service is a managed service for brands that need sales and leads. If you mainly want a music video watched, our YouTube campaign fits better.

Match the objective to your goal

Meta's help centre lists six objectives: Awareness, Traffic, Engagement, Leads, App promotion and Sales. Meta advises knowing what you want before you choose. For a musician the useful ones map like this:

  • Mailing list: Leads. Meta's own example is people signing up for a newsletter.
  • Tickets or merch: Sales, which finds people likely to purchase and can optimise for other actions, such as adding an item to basket.
  • Visits to your tour page or store: Traffic, which sends people to a destination such as your website or Facebook Page.
  • Being remembered at release: Awareness, which aims to reach the people most likely to remember your ad.

Pick one per campaign. None of the six is a streams objective, so Meta's ads cannot promise streams.

Placements, tracking and music rights

Placements. Meta recommends Advantage+ placements and says adding placements does not raise the cost of your ad. They include Instagram Reels and Facebook Reels, so a vertical cut of your video is worth having.

Tracking. The Meta pixel is code on your website that logs actions such as a purchase, and the Conversions API sends the same kind of data from your server. Meta's terms bar placing your pixel on websites you do not own, so if an ad links straight to a streaming service, Meta sees the click and nothing after it. Send fans to your own page first.

Music rights. Meta says the licensed library on Instagram is for personal, non-commercial use, while Sound Collection, with over 14,000 royalty-free songs and sounds, can be used in ads. Its Music Guidelines prohibit commercial use of music without appropriate licences and say content can be blocked, muted or removed. Your own recording is safest if you control its rights. If a label or distributor holds them, ask first.

Review time and budget

Meta reviews ads before they run, most within 24 hours, though some take longer, and editing targeting or creative starts a new review. Submit days before release.

Meta says optimising for purchases may need more budget than optimising for landing page views. With a cost per result goal, the daily budget should be at least five times that goal, so a USD 5 goal needs USD 25 a day. We found no neutral benchmark for music ad costs, so treat any quoted cost per click as a guess.

Which option fits whom

Our two relevant services differ. Meta Ads runs inside your own ad account for a fee set in a custom proposal: an audit in week 1, ads live around day 10, a first report on day 30. We guarantee no return on ad spend, and its case studies cover EdTech, education, supplements and beauty e-commerce, not music.

Music marketing is a different product: a YouTube campaign for your video through Google Ads with a guaranteed minimum of views, plus one editorial feature, from $249 per release. It does not run Meta ads. See YouTube ads for musicians.
